I like say that I´m a programmer, because here in Brasil if I say: I´m programmer, the people know what is my profession.

But if I say: I´m developer, then people ask: What a developer does?

In my opinion, the both words mean the same in our profession, but I prefer programmer.

Thank to interest Jairo :)

Agreed

"Software developer" meaning of "developer" word is a presumption for computer world only, I think; so "what developing you ?" is a natural question of other people.

My choice is "Data Processing Worker" ;)

Happy developing to all programmers :D

Designer - Doing the work of Planning and policy making.
Developer - Co-ordinating people and other resources and seeing that things go in line with planning.
Programmer - Well, you know that.

Many times ( in Clipper/HMG world ) we take the charge of the above three. :)
East or West HMG is the Best.
South or North HMG is worth.
...the possibilities are endless.

Very interesting discussion, I agree with Rathinagiri

The programmer is very strange profession, in theory it should only encode what is a developer prepared, practically have to know/do everything, some would say, "one man band"

Are somebody ask you: do you know make execll table? fix Word document? unlock program? to fix/repair computer? scan picture? something else that has nothing to do with programming?

It's probably the same everywhere...

Meaning of "Developer" is a bit "misty", I think; even for other area.

If we take "co-ordinating" as a prerequisite, we need exclude a single man programmer who develop their own software.

I agree with you, Dragan.

People asks frequently "since you are programmer, that is computer expert; come and solve <this or that problem>, such as virus cleaning, formatting hard disk, find lost files / folders / passwords etc ..

And again, you are right, It's probably the same everywhere...

Thanks Rathinagiri for the clarifications. Now I know that both words haven´t the same meaning.

Don't be bad at the mouth of others !

Whether it's in a professional or social setting, it's not appropriate to bad mouth people.
You certainly don't earn respect this way.
If you're unhappy with a certain individual and what he/she is doing, talk to him/her and work things out.
Don't talk behind his/her back.
This is the kind of behavior that attracts gossip and negativity.
Not only does it reflect badly on you as a person, it also hurts the other party, whether you realize it or not.
Be honest and transparent in your communications.

To think about !
No body can change what another person writes, because it is a huge insult.
