When returning multiple values, how would you approach it?

That's a nice compromise, franco. Somewhere between absolute immutable variables, and variables just mutable enough to do the job on a module level.

Speaking for my own taste - If we don't return them in some hash or array or other structure, then this would be my second choice. Passing by reference is tempting because it's so convenient.

I use private variables in calling program. This way they are available where ever I go from calling program. When calling program
is closed the variables are closed.
